why do cats catch mice

I've always wondered why my cat, Whiskers, is so obsessed with catching mice. Even though I feed her regularly, she still brings me "gifts" of dead mice. Is this just instinct, or is there more to it? Do cats see it as a game, or are they trying to teach me something? It's both fascinating and a bit gross, and I'd love to understand the behavior better.

From what I've read, it's mostly instinct—cats are natural hunters, and even well-fed ones can't resist the urge to chase small prey. My vet told me it’s like their brain is wired to practice hunting skills, even if they don’t need the food. Maybe Whiskers is just keeping her skills sharp!

I think it’s also a sign of affection. My cat, Luna, drops mice at my feet like she’s proud of her catch and wants to share. Some say it’s their way of "providing" for their human, like we’re part of their family. Still, I wish she’d stick to toys instead of real critters!
